The Heidelberg monkey is a must-visit for those in town. It is said touching the gold disk will bring fortune, rubbing the fingers ensures a return to Heidelberg, and stroking the nearby bronze mice will improve fertility.
After a long day of exploring Heidelberg – complete with pretzels and beer – it was hard to stay out after the sun went down. However, a trip to the top of the Philosopher’s Way for sunset guaranteed we’d see the city at night.
In case you didn’t know already, I am a real sucker for ruins! I love the decay of what once was and imagining what it might have looked like in its prime. I love exploring the crumbling walls and admiring how nature is slowly reclaiming what is hers.
One of our favorite parts about visiting historic towns in Germany is these adorable tiny streets! Obviously better for pedestrians, we were also surprised to see commuting buses thunder between these tight buildings. It was really quite a sight! We prefer the car-free walkways. Much quieter and just as charming!
The town of Heidelberg is magical with its historic old town. With a hilltop castle and views along the Nekar river, we were completely blown away. There is something special about this place that made us feel like we were in a fairytale. The cobblestone streets and medieval architecture were a pleasant view into old Germany. It is a wonderful place for a romantic holiday and the perfect fairytale town.
